The reader of the Qur'an is immediately struck with perhaps its most salient theme: the doom of the [[Qur'an, Hadith and Scholars:Non-Muslims|unbelievers]] in their eternal abode, the fire, or hell. In hell, as the Qur'an points out over and over, the unbelievers will be subject to eternal torment for all eternity, of different and agonizing types. They will cry out to their Lord for relief, but they will receive in return only more torment. The Qur'an is very explicit about the agonizing, painful nature of this torture. The polytheists are surely doomed to go there, but Jews, Christians, and believers who commit sins against Allah may also be sent there. The hadith also adds in the curious detail that most of the inhabitants of hell are/shall be women.

{{Quote|{{Quran-range|18|52|53}}|One Day He will say, "Call on those whom ye thought to be My partners," and they will call on them, but they will not listen to them; and We shall make for them a place of common perdition. And the Sinful shall see the fire and apprehend that they have to fall therein: no means will they find to turn away therefrom.}}

{{Quote|{{Quran-range|18|99|53}}|On that day We shall leave them to surge like waves on one another: the trumpet will be blown, and We shall collect them all together. And We shall present Hell that day for Unbelievers to see, all spread out,- (Unbelievers) whose eyes had been under a veil from remembrance of Me, and who had been unable even to hear. Do the Unbelievers think that they can take My servants as protectors besides Me? Verily We have prepared Hell for the Unbelievers for (their) entertainment.}}

{{Quote|{{Quran-range|18|104|53}}|"Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works?" They are those who deny the Signs of their Lord and the fact of their having to meet Him (in the Hereafter): vain will be their works, nor shall We, on the Day of Judgment, give them any weight. That is their reward, Hell, because they rejected Faith, and took My Signs and My Messengers by way of jest.}}

{{Quote|{{Quran-range|47|15}}|(Here is) a Parable of the Garden which the righteous are promised: in it are rivers of water incorruptible; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine, a joy to those who drink; and rivers of honey pure and clear. In it there are for them all kinds of fruits; and Grace from their Lord. (Can those in such Bliss) be compared to such as shall dwell for ever in the Fire, and be given, to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels (to pieces)?}}
