The prophet is recorded, depending on the source, as having had over 30 wives in addition to concubines and "possessions of the right hand" or slave girls. Although many of these marriages were conducted in part to seal alliances with important figures in the Muslim community such as Abu Bakr, the tradition is also quite explicit about the fact that Muhammad was very fond of women. The tradition also imputes impressive sexual prowress to him, such as the following hadith:
{{Quote|{{Bukhari|1|5|268|}}|Narrated Qatada: Anas bin Malik said, "The Prophet used to visit all his wives in a round, during the day and night '''and they were eleven in number.'''" I asked Anas, "Had the Prophet the strength for it?" Anas replied, "We used to say that the Prophet was given the strength of thirty (men)." And Sa'id said on the authority of Qatada that Anas had told him about nine wives only (not eleven).}}
