Hydrogen in the Quran

The word "hydrogen" is mentioned nowhere in the Quran. The Quran uses the Arabic pronoun suffix ها which has nothing to do with hydrogen and some propagandists of "miracles in the Quran" are trying to claim that the word ها refers to hydrogen.

The claim

The element Hydrogen is represented in the periodic table by the symbol "H".

"H" in Arabic is "هـ". The sun is predominantly made of "هـ".

It turned out that all verses of chapter "The Sun" end with "هـ".

Chapter "The Sun" is the only chapter in the Quran whose verses all end with the symbol for Hydrogen.

How could an illiterate man who lived 1400 years ago have known the chemical composition of the sun?

The Sun and hydrogen

The Sun is around 75% hydrogen [2], but all verses supposedly point to hydrogen. So if the Quran really claims that the Sun is made of hydrogen, then the Quran is inaccurate, because the Sun is made of more than hydrogen.

Sura 91: Chapter of The Sun

ها can mean literally "her" or "their". And some Arabic feminine words are referred in English as "it", so in English translation, it is also translated as "it". The sura uses this Arabic word and it has nothing to do with hydrogen.

وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا

By the sun and its (ها) brightness

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلاهَا

And [by] the moon when it follows it (ها)

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلاَّهَا

And [by] the day when it displays it (ها)

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا

And [by] the night when it covers it (ها)

وَالسَّمَاء وَمَا بَنَاهَا

And [by] the sky and He who constructed it (ها)

وَالأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا

And [by] the earth and He who spread it (ها)

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا

And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it (ها)

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا

And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its (ها) righteousness,

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا

He has succeeded who purifies it (ها),

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا

And he has failed who instills it (ها) [with corruption].

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا

Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their (ها) transgression,

إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا

When the most wretched of them (ها) was sent forth.

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا

And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her (ها) drink."

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا

But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it (ها) equal [upon all of them].

وَلا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا

And He does not fear the consequence thereof (ها).

Quran, chapter 91, Sahih International translation
  • "thereof" is "its"

Other places with the same rhyme

There are other suras in which the final rhyme is ها. For example in sura 79 (chapter of "Those Who Pull Out"). Is this also hydrogen?

أَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاء بَنَاهَا

Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? Allah constructed it.

رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا

He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.

وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا

And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.

وَالأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهَا

And the earth after that he spread it

أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاءَهَا وَمَرْعَاهَا

He extracted from it its water and its pasture,

وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا

And the mountains He set [them] firmly

  • Some apologists are trying to claim that دَحَاهَا means "he made it in a shape of an ostrich egg" (see Flat Earth and the Quran)

Sura 54: Chapter of The Moon

Let's test if the supposed miracle works for other suras. We have analogous sura 54, which is called "The Moon". And yes, all verses end on the same letter:

Quran, sura 54

The final letter in all these verses is ر (ra). Ra is a symbol for the element Radium. And no, the Moon is not made of Radium.

Do the verses really end on h (ه) ?

The claim supposes that all the verses of the sura of The Sun end on the Arabic letter ه (h). And that is also false. ها consists of two letters:

  • ه (ha)
  • ا (alif)

So the last letter of ها is alif and not ha and all the verses end on ا (aa).

If we say that the alif just makes the h longer, then it disproves that it is referring to hydrogen, because hydrogen doesn't start on "haa", but on "hy".

ها versus hydrogen

Hydrogen is not called ها in Arabic. Arabic uses full transliteration هيدروجين (hydrogen) or "H".

The Arabic version of the word "hydrogen" (هيدروجين) doesn't begin with "haa" (ها) , but with "hee" (هي). So the verses should have rather ended on هي.

The English word "hydrogen" begins with the word hydro- which is from the Greek word ύδωρ which is pronounced as ydor, so it doesn't even have the important "h". [3] So why is the Quran so obsessed with the English version "hydrogen", does Allah love English?
