Classical scholars noticed an apparent contradiction with another passage, {{Quran-range|79|28|30}}, in which the Earth is spread out after the heaven (singular) has been raised and proportioned. Ibn Kathir notes in his tafsir for verse 2:29 that scholars reconciled this with the other passages by noticing that it refers to the spreading of the earth, not its creation.
